The Glaciological
Centre operating under UNESCO auspices will continue its work in Kazakhstan.
The Mazhilis, the lower house of the Kazakh Parliament, has ratified an
agreement between the Kazakh government and the international organization. The
document, signed in Astana this June, aims to strengthen international
scientific cooperation in the study of glaciers and permafrost. Previously approved
in 2017 for a six-year period, it extends the status of the Central Asian
Regional Glaciological Centre in Kazakhstan for another eight years. As part of
this work, glacier research will begin at three permanent research stations in
the Almaty region. The studies will provide government bodies and international
organizations with data on the condition of the Syr Darya, Amu Darya, Ile, and
Shu-Talas rivers. The centre was established at Kazakhstan’s initiative.
«The effectiveness of the centre’s activities was confirmed by a UNESCO audit conducted in 2023. Experts noted that it holds a unique status as the only specialized glaciological centre operating under UNESCO auspices in Central Asia. The centre contributes to enhancing scientific capacity in the field of water security in Central Asia,» said Kazakh Vice Minister of Science and Higher Education Gulzat Kobenova.
