Working group on parliamentary reform holds meeting

Another meeting of the working group on parliamentary reform was held in Astana, chaired by State Counselor Erlan Karin. Participants discussed issues related to the formation of the future unicameral Parliament. In particular, they reviewed proposals from working group members, as well as suggestions submitted by Kazakh citizens through the e-Otinish and E-gov platforms. The meeting examined and discussed approaches to the qualification requirements for members of Parliament, the procedure for their election, the quantitative and qualitative composition, quota allocation and the term of office of the new legislative body. The initiatives put forward will be thoroughly analyzed and systematized. Work on forming the main approaches to implementing parliamentary reform will continue at upcoming meetings of the working group.

«By November 15, special proposals on parliamentary reform were submitted on time by members of the working group and six political parties. All received proposals were divided into three groups. First, proposals from political parties were highlighted separately. Second, submissions from the working group were compiled into a separate block. Third, proposals submitted by citizens and individual public figures through the e-Otinish and E-gov platforms were systematized separately. The Head of State instructed that the initiatives collected within the working group be thoroughly reviewed and that recommendations be prepared on modernizing the parliamentary system. This is the main task of the working group,» Karin said.
