Information about grape varieties grown in Uzbekistan will now be included in a global genetic database. Scientists from the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics of the country’s Academy of Sciences have added genomic data on 10 local grape varieties. This documentation makes it possible to confirm their origin and also allows researchers from other countries to study Uzbek varieties. In addition, the research contributes to preserving the unique genetic diversity of grapes and to developing varieties that are resistant to climatic conditions and characterized by high yields.
«Uzbek grape varieties developed along a different path compared to European ones. While in Europe breeding was mainly focused on wine grapes, in Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, table grapes varieties were primarily developed. Having evolved under arid and hot climatic conditions, unlike European varieties, they are well adapted to high temperatures. They possess different genes, which not only make them resilient to such climates but also determine their distinctive flavor characteristics. Uzbek grape varieties are highly valued worldwide,» noted Ilkhom Salakhutdinov, Head of the Laboratory, Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics, Uzbekistan’s Academy of Sciences.
As experts note, scientifically grounded breeding
contributes to the production of competitive products on the international
market. Uzbekistan supplies grapes not only to the domestic market but also
actively exports them abroad. Uzbek grapes are shipped to 21
countries, with total exports amounting to $245 million.
