Large-scale reforms announced by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the
fifth meeting of the National Kurultai (Congress) have sparked a wide response
in foreign media. International outlets are analyzing the initiatives and the
relevance of the country’s political transformation. According to the
U.S.-based Times CA, the institutional changes proposed by the Head of State
are based on the 2022 constitutional amendments and are aimed at strengthening
the role of Parliament.
Radio France Internationale notes that the scope of the planned reforms in Kazakhstan is comparable to the adoption of a new Constitution. The report also highlights the symbolism of the proposed name for the parliament - Kurultai, which reflects respect for traditions.
According to Italy’s Agenzia Nova, an important role in the changes is assigned to the Constitutional Commission, which will systematize proposals and prepare amendments to the country’s Basic Law. The date for holding a referendum will be determined afterward.
In turn, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency notes that the reforms in Kazakhstan will complete the previously established political framework and are aimed at increasing the effectiveness of Parliament and the accountability of political parties.
