Kazakhstan, Japan strengthen cooperation

Today, as part of his official visit to Japan, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held meetings with the heads of leading companies and government organizations. During talks with Hiroshi Mikitani, the founder of Rakuten Group, the Head of State noted that the company’s experience is of interest to Kazakhstan, which has entered a new phase of digital transformation. Kazakhstan is also interested in Rakuten’s developments in cancer treatment. Tokayev welcomed the company’s interest in expanding its presence in Kazakhstan.

Cooperation in digitalization, the sustainable development of capital cities, and the introduction of innovative solutions in urban governance were discussed with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. The President was presented with the Smart City concept, which uses advanced technologies to improve the quality of life for residents. Following the meeting, and in the presence of the President, Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two capitals. The Head of State also visited Tokyo’s Emergency Situation Center.

The implementation of joint investment projects in transport and logistics, energy, the nuclear industry, metallurgy, and geological exploration was discussed with the head of Sumitomo Corporation, a major trading and investment company. Shingo Ueno reported on preparations for a joint project with Kazatomprom in the field of nuclear medicine.

President Tokayev also received Ichiro Takahara, Chairman & CEO of Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). Cooperation in geological exploration, extraction and processing of critical minerals was discussed. The President noted JOGMEC’s strong interest in implementing projects in Kazakhstan. The parties also considered the possibility of expanding the organization’s participation in geological exploration projects in the country.

In addition, the President met with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mitsui. Tokayev welcomed the company’s plans to participate in the construction of a production facility in Astana focused on capital repair of equipment. Areas of mutual interest also include transport and logistics, as well as the introduction of technologies aimed at preventing natural disasters.

The Head of State also discussed the construction of a production facility in Astana for the overhaul and refurbishment of mining equipment with Hiroyuki Ogawa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Komatsu Corporation. Ogawa noted that the facility is set to become the largest hub in Central Asia. The sides also addressed the training of qualified personnel, with the company planning to establish a regional training center in Kazakhstan for operators, mechanics, and engineers.

President Tokayev discussed prospects for expanding cooperation between Kazakhstan’s mining enterprises and Hitachi Construction Machinery with the company’s President, Masafumi Senzaki. The sides noted that promising areas for cooperation include digitalization, the introduction of green technologies, and autonomous transport systems.
