Kazakhstan aims to expand its UNESCO listings

A number of historical sites in Kazakhstan, as well as literary works, may be added to UNESCO heritage lists. The proposed nominations include the Zharkent Mosque in Zhetisu, the Ascension Cathedral in Almaty, and 17,000 petroglyphs of the Karatau mountain range. These archaeological monuments rightfully deserve such recognition, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at the National Kurultai in Kyzylorda. Relevant authorities noted that work in this area will be intensified. The Ministry of Culture and Information will prepare the required documentation in line with UNESCO standards over the next two years. The President also said that Abai’s «Words of Edification» should be included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register of documentary heritage. According to Tokayev, the great poet’s reflections remain timeless, and the modern concept of an «Adal Azamat» is closely linked to Abai’s idea of the «Perfect Human». Documents for the inclusion of Abai’s works in the international organization’s register are currently undergoing expert review.
