Kazakh President reviews proposals on constitutional reform

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has approved the date for the fifth meeting of the National Kurultai (Congress), which will be held on January 20 in Kyzylorda. The announcement was made during a working meeting on parliamentary reform chaired by the Head of State, with the participation of State Counsellor Erlan Karin and Assistant to the President on Legal Issues Yerzhan Zhiyenbayev. Karin informed the President that during the Working Group meeting on January 9, basic approaches were developed to define the status, powers, and functions of the future unicameral Parliament, as well as its interaction with other branches of government. At the next meeting, scheduled for January 15, participants will discuss the powers of the new Parliament in ensuring the functioning of key state institutions. Zhiyenbayev briefed the Head of State on new proposals for constitutional reform submitted by members of the Working Group and the public. President Tokayev emphasized the importance of taking these views and initiatives into account, noting that the final decision on constitutional reform will be made by the citizens of Kazakhstan through a nationwide referendum.
