UNESCO has added the art of breeding Turkmen Alabay to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was made during the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee held in New Delhi. To mark the occasion, a celebratory event took place in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, featuring performances by artists as well as representatives of the legendary breed. The audience enjoyed performances by Alabays from the State Circus, and the winners of the annual international competition ‘The Brave Turkmen Alabay of the Year’ were also presented.
«This is truly joyful
news. Our national treasure and heritage, passed down to us from our ancestors
- the art of breeding Turkmen Alabay - has been included in UNESCO’s List of
Intangible Cultural Heritage. It should be especially noted that Turkmen Alabay
dogs have been inseparable companions of the Turkmen people for thousands of
years. They are distinguished by their loyalty to their owners, courage, and
strength,» noted Amanmurat Atayev,
Senior Lecturer at the Turkmen State Agricultural University.
