Kazakhstan’s constitutional reform draws expert attention

The provisions of the draft new Constitution of Kazakhstan represent a continuation of the country’s course toward political modernization, according to Brussels-based political analyst Alberto Turkstra. In his view, this marks a consistent phase of transformations aimed at strengthening institutions and balancing the branches of government. Among the key innovations, the expert highlights the transition to a unicameral system and the introduction of the institution of the Vice President, which he links to increased efficiency and predictability of the political model.

«The constitutional changes that have been announced by President Tokayev, this is the culmination of the new stage of Kazakhstan’s modernization and nation-building, which has to deal with strong, accountable, and resilient institutions. I think by adding this figure of a Vice President, you add an element of predictability. This is very important for foreign investors, and it sends the message that there will be not a major change in the strategic orientation and the strategic priorities of Kazakhstan,» noted Alberto Turkstra, Political Analyst and Project Manager at Diplomatic World.
