Kazakhstan opens two modernized checkpoints

Kazakhstan has completed the reconstruction of the Kazygurt border checkpoint on the Uzbekistan border and the Temir Baba checkpoint on the Turkmenistan border. Their modernization is part of a large-scale state program to upgrade border infrastructure, implemented under the instruction of the Head of State. During the reconstruction works, traffic at the checkpoints was neither stopped nor reduced in capacity. This was achieved through temporary traffic management schemes for cargo and passenger flows. Thanks to the introduction of modern technologies at the upgraded checkpoints, border-crossing time has been reduced to 30 minutes, and capacity has increased to 1,000 vehicles per day. Overall, traffic through the modernized checkpoints has increased 2.5-fold: in 2022, 640,000 cars crossed the border; today, the figure has risen to 1.5 million. The state modernization program covers nine border checkpoints on the borders with China, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Work on the remaining three checkpoints is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.   ¤

«We are introducing a new information system, Keden, which will replace three previously used systems and provide centralized registration of all passing cars and individuals. A main dispatch control center is being established to consolidate all movement information. As for throughput capacity, it is expected to increase sixfold. This year, thanks to the four modernized border checkpoints already commissioned, throughput has reached 1.8 million vehicles,» said Kazakh Minister of Finance Madi Takiyev.
