Kazakhstan to launch autonomous vehicles by 2027

Kazakhstan is set to launch its first large pilot projects involving autonomous freight trucks in 2027. The possibility of introducing air taxis in the future is also being considered. According to the Ministry of Transport, a draft law on unmanned transport will be submitted to Parliament next year. It is expected that, initially, to ensure public safety, passenger driverless taxis will have drivers on board, following China’s example.

«For example, we visited Shenzhen, where you can ride in driverless taxis, but there is still a driver inside. I even recorded it. Their streets are heavily congested, yet there was nothing unusual, the car drove us from point A through the city center to point B entirely on its own, with the driver just sitting there. This is an intermediate stage, and it seems that we will follow the same gradual approach to ensure the safety of passengers and the public Kazakh Minister of Transport Nurlan Sauranbayev noted.
