Final draft of new Constitution presented to Kazakh President

The Constitutional Commission has presented the final draft of the new Constitution to the Head of State. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received Chair of the Constitutional Commission and Chair of the Constitutional Court Elvira Azimova, Deputy Chair of the Constitutional Commission and State Counselor Erlan Karin, and Constitutional Commission member and Assistant to the President on Legal Issues Yerzhan Zhienbayev. The final draft of the new Basic Law was developed following 12 Commission meetings. The text of the new Constitution was prepared based on citizen and expert proposals submitted through the eGov and e-Otinish platforms since October of last year. The draft also takes into account the approaches formulated by the working group on parliamentary reform from October to January. Azimova noted that, following the discussion, the Constitutional Commission proposed submitting the draft new Constitution to a national referendum. Tokayev emphasized the Commission’s extensive work, stating that the provisions of the new fundamental document mark a transition to an entirely new constitutional model. He also announced that he will soon sign a decree on holding a national referendum on the adoption of a new Constitution.
