At the fifth meeting of the Constitutional Commission
in Astana, alongside the results of a large-scale public discussion, a proposal
was made to change the name of the referendum itself. It has been suggested to
replace «republican» with «nationwide», «people’s», or «national». Participants
also endorsed provisions aimed at strengthening the status of lawyers. The
meeting further addressed the composition and functions of the People’s
Council, which is set to replace the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and
the National Kurultai. The council will include representatives from ethnic
groups, public associations, and regional maslikhats.
