Constitutional referendum – important step toward democratization

The draft new Constitution enshrines the legal foundations for implementing the concept of a Just Kazakhstan, as stated by Senate Chairman Maulen Ashimbayev during a meeting in Almaty with Maslikhat members, representatives of the public, ethnocultural associations, and youth. Participants discussed key aspects of joint work ahead of the upcoming national referendum. According to Maulen Ashimbayev, the course of large-scale reforms initiated by the Head of State is based on the principles of justice, the rule of law, and government accountability to society.

«In accordance with the Decree of the Head of State, the draft new Constitution has been submitted to a nationwide vote. Kazakh citizens will make their choice on March 15, 2026. The referendum, scheduled for that date, represents an important step in the democratization of the country’s political system. The Basic Law is aimed at strengthening statehood and independence, as well as improving citizens’ welfare,» said Maulen Ashimbayev, Chairperson of the Senate, the Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament.
