Central Asia and Afghanistan: transit potential and new routes

Kazakhstan’s partnership with Afghanistan opens a route to the Indian Ocean. New transit routes were discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the Regional Contact Group of Special Representatives of Central Asian countries on Afghanistan, held in Astana. Yerkin Tukumov, Special Representative of the Kazakh President for Afghanistan, emphasized the importance of developing transport and logistics corridors to South Asia for exporting domestic products to foreign markets. According to him, this will open up new opportunities for foreign trade.

«We are very interested in the Afghan market, which has a population of 45 million. For example, our flour, vegetable oil, and medicines are in high demand among Afghan consumers. Afghanistan also serves as an important transit corridor for Kazakhstan to the ports of the Indian Ocean,» noted Yerkin Tukumov, Special Representative of the Kazakh President for Afghanistan.
