Turkmenistan, FAO expand agricultural partnership

Turkmenistan and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have agreed to jointly implement water-saving technologies and combat soil degradation. The agreements are formalized in four documents signed following the international conference «Health and Nutrition in a Changing Climate» held in Ashgabat. The documents outline cooperation in the management of transboundary river water resources, sustainable land use, and the adaptation of agriculture to climate change. All projects aim to enhance food security and strengthen the resilience of the region’s agricultural sector. The agreements were signed during an official visit to Turkmenistan by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu. The Central Asian country has been a member of the organization since 1995, during which time ten joint programs in agriculture and food security have been implemented. During the visit, the FAO delegation also toured modern livestock and horse-breeding complexes, where digital technologies are actively employed.

«We have very ambitious plans, including cooperation in agriculture, environmental protection, natural resources, and many other areas related to the work of FAO, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization,» said Viorel Gutu, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia.

«This is our first mission this year and we think that in particular now with this country, Turkmenistan, we can do more and more in a scientific specific area of work for us in rural development, of course also in climate change and rural transformation. FAO is ready to work together more and more,» said Maurizio Martina, FAO Deputy Director-General
