Kazakhstan intends to expand its list of UNESCO sites, and active work is underway in this direction. Underground mosques in Mangystau, as well as the Fergana-Syr Darya Corridor, may be included in the list. According to the Ministry of Culture and Information, Kazakhstan also nominated new sites in 2025 - the Ustyurt Plateau and the Aran hunting traps in the Mangystau region. In addition, three more nominations are being prepared - the Ascension Cathedral, the Zharkent Mosque, and the petroglyphs of the Karatau mountain range. At a meeting of the National Kurultai, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev paid special attention to these sites. The Head of State emphasized that such invaluable archaeological and cultural monuments, along with national traditions, rightfully deserve global recognition.
«If our sites are nominated
for inclusion on the UNESCO list, it is, of course, global recognition. This
means that their preservation will be ensured at the international level. For
example, we report annually to UNESCO on the condition of the Mausoleum of
Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. I believe that the more sites we nominate, the more the
world will learn about our historical heritage,» noted Gaukhar Sarsekova, Chief Expert at the Department of
Historical and Cultural Heritage, Culture Committee, Kazakh Ministry of Culture
and Information.
