Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev cast his vote in
the national referendum on the draft new Constitution at polling station No. 51
in the Palace of Schoolchildren in the capital. He emphasized the exceptional
importance of the referendum for the future development of the country.
«I congratulate all of
you, as today is a momentous day for our country. The Constitution is truly a
historic document that guarantees the rights and freedoms of our citizens, giving
it exceptional significance. The new Constitution affirms the territorial
integrity, independence, and sovereignty of our nation. The Constitution
adopted in 1995 served its purpose and guided our country for 35 years, but times have changed,
and the moment has come to adopt a new Basic Law,» President Tokayev said.
Afterward, President Tokayev held a briefing for representatives of domestic and foreign media. He answered questions regarding the main goals and objectives of the constitutional reform, as well as the international agenda. A reporter from Jibek Joly TV Channel asked the President about the need to create the position of Vice President, noting that some experts suggest that the constitutional reform may be a preparation for the transition of power and future presidential elections.
«Some experts believe
that competition within Kazakhstan’s government is increasing and that various
trends are emerging that may raise concerns. However, there is no reason to
fear that this will negatively affect society. The establishment of the post of
Vice President will strengthen the institutions of state power, and this will
become evident over time. As
President, I place great hopes in this position, as well as in the reforms as a whole,» President Tokayev added.
