Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev arrived in Ashgabat to
participate in a forum marking the International Year of Peace and Trust. He
was welcomed by the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly
Berdimuhamedov. During their meeting, the sides discussed key issues on the
bilateral agenda. Later, President Tokayev held talks with the President of
Turkmenistan, focusing on prospects for cooperation, ways to expand mutual
trade, and the implementation of joint projects in the energy, transport and
logistics, and agricultural sectors. Speaking at the forum, the Head of State
elaborated on the development of these areas, noting Kazakhstan’s strong focus
on advancing the Middle Corridor and creating an integrated transport system.
He also called for restoring strategic balance and establishing a fair global
order to promote international stability and security.
«In
this regard, Kazakhstan welcomes the activation of the negotiation process on
the Ukrainian conflict. We also welcome the signing of the agreement addressing
the situation in the Middle East. Kazakhstan’s decision to join the Abraham
Accords is driven by the aspiration to contribute to stabilizing the situation
in the region. At the same time, Kazakhstan supports the creation of a
sovereign Palestinian state as a crucial factor in resolving this protracted
military and political crisis. We also regard the signing of the Joint
Declaration on Peace by Azerbaijan and Armenia as an event of historic
importance,» Tokayev said.
Speaking about peace, the President emphasized the importance of
strengthening interfaith, interethnic, and intercultural dialogue. He noted
that for over 20
years, Kazakhstan has regularly hosted Congresses of Leaders of World and
Traditional Religions, which have become a respected international platform for
dialogue and mutual understanding.
«At the
recent eighth Congress in Astana, Kazakhstan launched the Movement for Peace
initiative. It is essentially a call to end military violence and pursue
peaceful solutions in the spirit of collective responsibility toward future
generations,» Tokayev added.
The Head of State placed special emphasis on the environmental
agenda, focusing on the rational use of water. To this end, he proposed
establishing an International Water Organization under the UN, which will work
to advance global diplomacy on the issue.
«One optimal option could be to transform the inter-agency UN-Water mechanism into a full-fledged specialized agency or organization of the United Nations. Implementing this initiative would be fully aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and, of course, serve the interests of the entire international community. In April next year, Kazakhstan will host a Regional Environmental Summit in Astana, where it intends to initiate international consultations on the creation of a global water organization,» Tokayev noted.
The President expressed confidence that the Ashgabat forum will help strengthen
constructive partnerships among the participating states.
