Kazakh Mazhilis ratifies agreements with China, OTS

Chinese investors are set to build three major renewable energy facilities in Kazakhstan — two wind farms and one solar power plant — with a total capacity of 1.8 GW. The Mazhilis, the lower house of the Kazakh Parliament, has ratified the corresponding intergovernmental agreement. Under the agreement, the two countries will join forces to develop and implement alternative energy projects in Kazakhstan.

«The total investment in the projects amounts to $2.2 billion. Financing will involve international financial institutions and banks, reflecting strong investor confidence in Kazakhstan’s energy sector,» said Yerlan Akkenzhenov, Kazakh Minister of Energy.

Member states of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) plan to join forces in responding to natural disasters and emergencies. The Mazhilis has ratified an agreement to establish a civil protection mechanism within the Organization. The agreement provides for developing unified professional training standards in emergency management, launching a training program, and establishing a Council of Ministers for emergencies and a Secretariat for the civil protection mechanism.

«The Secretariat’s headquarters will be located in Istanbul, with financial support from the Turkish side. It will be headed by a Secretary-General appointed by the Council of Ministers for a three-year term. The Council of Ministers will be chaired by the head of the emergency agency of the member state presiding over the OTS,» said Kegen Tursynbayev, Kazakh Vice Minister for Emergency Situations.
