E-commerce in Kazakhstan grows sevenfold

E-commerce in Kazakhstan has grown sevenfold over the past five years. Last year, online sales exceeded 3 trillion tenge, accounting for 14 percent of total retail trade. By the end of this year, experts expect that share to surpass 15 percent. The Ministry of Trade and Integration also plans to raise e-commerce’s share to 18.5 percent of overall retail turnover by 2029. The figures were announced by Ansar Orazaliyev, Director of the Ministry’s Department of Domestic Trade Development. According to him, the growth of e-commerce is linked to the expansion of cashless payments, retail fintech, and access to the internet. Marketplaces have also played a significant role in increasing the sector’s share.

 

«There has been a noticeable increase in the number of sellers on marketplaces. For example, on many platforms, multiple sellers now compete within a single product listing. This trend is fueled by the growing presence of mid-priced segment sellers on these platforms. Instead of creating their own websites, they increasingly prefer using marketplaces, which allow them to launch more quickly and access platform resources. Looking ahead, the number of sellers is expected to continue rising, along with the adoption of new tools to gain various competitive advantagessaid Orazaliyev.

 

It is worth noting that Kazakhstan is currently implementing its E-commerce Development Plan through 2027, aimed at boosting the sector. New B2B projects have been introduced for marketplace entrepreneurs, enabling direct purchases from China. Online platforms also support domestic producers through sections such as «Made in Kazakhstan». Additionally, fulfillment and distribution centers for e-commerce goods are being built in Astana and Almaty.
